Create This “Ice Palace” Wall Finish Using Wood Icing®!

We are sharing this post by blogger Debbie Dion Hayes of MyPatchOfBlueSky.com

Create This "Ice Palace" Wall Finish Using Wood Icing Textura Paste

Have you noticed that rustic furniture can mix beautifully with a glamorous wall finish?

Our 1970s ranch home is far from glam, but I have decided that a gorgeous treatment on a focus wall can be a sweet addition.

We have an odd corner in our even odder right-angle hallway that runs the length of our house. I have struggled over the years to add interest and a lovely vignette, but it has to be narrow enough for people, pets and furniture to pass. It’s an unlikely area to be designated one of the prettiest spots in our home, but no one ever accused me of following rules when it comes to decorating, right?

So, after having a blast playing with Wood Icing® Textura Paste, a gorgeous wall stencil and a couple more favorite DIY products, I created this wall treatment called “Ice Palace.” Reflective, soft, with a hint of a dusting of snow, it was just what our dark corner, featuring a skinny, crusty cabinet needed.

Here’s everything you need to know to do it! I encourage you to practice first on a large piece of board, drywall, or plastic before you work on a wall.

(When you apply the finish on a wall you will need to tape off the trim and edges with painters tape and put down a drop cloth. Then find and mark the center of the wall – or the focal point – where you want to begin the pattern. Also find the center of the stencil to match up to the center of the wall. Begin at the top and work side to side and down, matching up the little registration marks.)

SUPPLIES
• WOOD ICING Textura Paste
• ROYAL DESIGN STUDIO Lisboa Tile stencil
• MODERN MASTERS Metallic Paint in Platinum
• ARTISAN ENHANCEMENTS Fine Stone
• water, containers, small flexible trowel, large metal trowel, sample board to practice, stir sticks, towels

MIX TEXTURA PASTE WITH SOME WATER
Create This "Ice Palace" Wall Finish Using Wood Icing Textura Paste
In a container, mix about 10% water with Textura Paste to soften it up a bit.

USE A SMALL TROWEL TO  PULL THE MIX THROUGH THE STENCIL

Tape the stencil on to the sample board. I am using an old sample so that you can see what I am doing better, and to show you that the wall will need no prep before this step!

Use a stir stick to load the Textura Paste onto your trowel and pull it down vertically.

Create This "Ice Palace" Wall Finish Using Wood Icing Textura Paste

Remove vertical streaks by going back over them with a light touch using the trowel. Use a wet towel to clean off the trowel as needed.

Remove the stencil and either place it in water, or clean it right away with soap and water. If you need to sand raised areas, do it before the paste is completely dried hard.

BRUSH OR ROLL THE METALLIC PAINT.

Brush or roll on one coat of Platinum paint. Let dry.

TROWEL ON FINE STONE

Use a stir stick to load some Fine Stone onto the large trowel.

Pull the trowel vertically, starting at the top. It will naturally deposit some material at the raised pattern and skip areas, which is the look you are going for. Resist the urge to fill in the area completely so that the platinum will show through and reflect soft light. Let dry.

Do a lap around the house to gather a few coordinating accessories to add to enhance your new look.

I liked the idea of trying out just a couple of reflective items since the finish is soft, but heavily textured.

I’m really pleased with the effect, and hope you are inspired and ready to try it too. Think how impressed your friends will be!

Use Wood Icing® Plus Rust, Patina, And A Stencil On Art Canvases

We are sharing this post by blogger Debbie Hayes of MyPatchOfBlueSky.com.

Wood Icing® canvas art project using heavy texture, rust, patina and a stencil

If you know me by now, you are aware that I adore anything crusty, rusty, and covered in patina. Furniture, accessories, mailboxes, old doors. Anything!

I have a blast combining products from my amazing clients to create what I call magic. Rose Wilde, owner of Wood Icing®, is wonderfully encouraging about my ideas for using Textura Paste. Years ago I had an employer who used to say they would just “wind me up and let me go” and Rose does the same. Be still my heart!

For this post I was in the mood to work on art canvases. But maybe not the traditional “hang-it-on-the-wall” variety. Sometimes artwork just placed on our plank wood coffee table with some strewn pine cones makes me just as happy.

I found these three pre-packaged gallery wrap canvases at Michael’s which were perfect, adding more interest and display possibilities.
SUPPLIES
• Wood Icing® Textura Paste
Modern Masters Metal Effects products: Primer, Iron Paint + Rust Activator, Copper Paint + Green Patina Solution, Bronze Paint + Blue Patina Solution, Permacoat Xtreme sealer
• Royal Design Studio Phoebe’s Tulip Wall Stencil
• canvases, color shaper or putty knife, paper towels, stencil brush, paint brushes, small roller, rags, containers

PRIME, ADD  IRON PAINT & SEAL

Roll or brush on 2 coats of Modern Masters Primer according to directions and let dry overnight. (Resist the temptation to use regular household primer, which will not work properly with Metal Effects products.)

Roll or brush on 2 coats of Iron Paint. Let Dry.

Spray 2 coats of Rust Activator according to directions. Let dry. Enjoy watching the rust develop!

When dry, brush on a coat of Permacoat Xtreme sealer so the Wood Icing Textura Paste will adhere. (Not shown.) Let dry.

ADD HEAVY TEXTURE

Butt the three canvases together. Use a color shaper tool or a putty knife to drag some layers of Textura Paste from the top down on the canvases. Don’t cover too much so the background rust will show. Let dry about 45 minutes or until completely dry.

ADD COPPER PAINT AND GREEN PATINA

Use a small, stiff artist paint brush to paint some copper onto the texture only. Let dry. Add another layer, but DO NOT LET DRY. Immediately spray Green Patina Solution generously on the entire surface. Let dry.

It’s great fun to watch as the patina evolves.

Here is the moment when you should decide whether or not you want to stop or add more. Since I was in a “let’s see what else we can do” mood, I added the next step. But I do love it at this point too!

ADD A STENCIL, BRONZE PAINT AND BLUE PATINA
Wood Icing canvas art project using rust, patina and a stencil

Lay the large stencil over the surface and move it around until you like the composition. Use a big stencil brush to stencil one layer of bronze paint. Leave the stencil in place. DO NOT LET DRY.

Spray Blue

Immediately spray the Blue Patina Solution. Remove the stencil and let dry. More fun watching the pattern evolve.

So was this the most fun ever? I even like the rusty, drippy edges.

At this point I am willing to bet that you are itching to try this. Am I right?

Get A Stone Effect Using Wood Icing®, Artisan Enhancements And A Royal Design Studio Stencil!

We are sharing a post by Debbie Dion Hayes from her blog MyPatchOfBlueSky.com

{Although this post is sponsored by Wood Icing™, the idea, experimentation, and comments are my own.}

Wood Icing/ Artisan Enhancements/ Royal Design frame
Are you always looking for these two things: a cool new furniture finish AND another picture frame to showcase your evolving family, friends and accomplishments? Me too!

You may know that I have the unique opportunity to work with several wonderful DIY products. Yes, I admit it, it’s a little slice of creative heaven for me.

Rose Wilde, co-owner of Wood Icing Co. had a great idea for a stone finish – let’s try some Artisan Enhancements Fine Stone on top of Wood Icing products to get the look of stone. So naturally I added a perfect Royal Design Studio stencil to enhance it all on this flat picture frame I unearthed in my clutter of “great stuff to use for blog posts.”

OTHER ITEMS rags, paint brushes, painters tape, sand paper

 STEP ONE
Paint one coat of Graphite Chalk Paint® and let dry. Knock off any points with sandpaper if needed.

STEP TWO
Lay the stencil over the frame in a pleasing position. Tape if you like. I chose an off-center placement since this is a frame and I wanted the look a bit artsy.

Put some Textura Paste on your palette knife or color shaper tool and pull it over the stencil openings. When the entire frame is covered, level out the paste. Let dry about 15 minutes.

 STEP THREE
Brush on one coat of Graphite and let dry.

Stipple or pounce a coat of Fine Stone on the entire surface of the frame and let dry. Due to the base coat of Graphite you will see some mottling of color. Sand the tops of the design to expose some of the white Sand Stone.

Brush on one coat of Graphite and let dry.
 STEP FOUR
Brush on a wash of Tree Bark Glaze. Let dry. Brush on a coat of Licorice. Before the Licorice drys, wipe the surface with a rag to expose some texture and pattern. When you like the effect, let dry for an hour.

Brush on one or two coats of Dull PolyAcrylic. Let dry.

Create This Lovely Fabric-Like Cabinet Finish Using Wood Icing™, Chalk Paint® And A Stencil!

We are sharing this post by Debbie Dion Hayes of MyPatchOfBlueSky.com

Cabinet finish using Wood Icing™ Textura Paste and Chalk Paint®

{Although this post is sponsored by Wood Icing™, the idea and comments are my own.}

Last week I spent three wonderful fall days wandering the High Point Market. It’s where buyers and interior designers go twice yearly to buy for their stores and clients. You can imagine the eye candy is over the top, and I get ideas faster than I can remember them. I did leave with the plan to create a furniture finish using Wood Icing® Textura Paste that is lightly textured, washed and soft gold and grey.

Yes, like pretty fabric, with a gorgeous glass pull that is similar to the pattern.

IMG_3124

What do you think? This is easy, fast and can be created in any colors that work well with soft gold, because I actually used the Wood Icing™ Textura Paste color as part of the finish.

SUPPLIES

Wood Icing cabinet finish supplies, including Textura Paste, Chalk Paint® and a stencil

• cabinet door for a sample, or a furniture item
• FROM WOOD ICING.COM: Textura Paste, Paris Grey & Pure White Chalk Paint®, and Clear Soft Wax
• stencil, mine is from RoyalDesignStudio.com
• brush, rags, cheesecloth or lint-free wiping cloth

PAINT THE CABINET & ADD TEXTURA PASTE

Cabinet finish using Wood Icing™ Textura Paste and Chalk Paint®

I used a cabinet door I found at Habitat for Humanity for $1. Lacey Jane the kitty helper insisted upon assisting. I lightly sanded the door and wiped it off because it was shiny. Then I brushed on one coat of Paris Grey and let it dry.

I cut my stencil edges off, in order for it to fit inside the panel more easily. I put it in various positions that I liked, and simply used my finger to push a bit of Textura Paste through the stencil. It dries quickly.

WASH ON PURE WHITE, WIPE SOME OFF & WAX

Wood Icing™ cabinet finish using Textura Paste, a stencil and Chalk Paint®

Brush on a thin layer of Pure White, in random strokes so it’s not too perfect. Let dry. Use a wet rag to pull of areas of the pattern until you like the look. Let dry.

Use cheesecloth to wipe on one layer of Clear Soft Wax. Wait a few minutes and wipe off all excess. Buff to a soft sheen. If this is a piece of furniture, wait a day and add another coat of Clear Wax.

Pretty isn’t it!

Make A Flat Project Fabulous Using Wood Icing™ Textura Paste And A Stencil!

{Although this post is sponsored by Wood Icing™, the idea and comments are my own.}

I just love this little cabinet. It sits near my bathroom and holds all of my very important girl stuff like lotions and potions. It has morphed over the years. I repaint it about every year, practically as often as I put new pillows on our bed.

Now that I have discovered Wood Icing™ products I am loving the fact that I can add texture and depth to even a small project to get a new look. Plus it’s water based so clean up is a breeze.

Though this piece is fun – with its gold shiny metallic and flat Paris Grey Chalk Paint® stripes, it clearly could use something. Some dimension on the stencil seems a quick and easy project.

SUPPLIES FROM WOOD ICING: Textura Paste and an Off Set Knife used to apply it

SUPPLIES FROM ROYAL DESIGN STUDIO: I used Royal Design Studio stencil Sun Flower Moroccan, Patina Green Stencil Creme and 3/4″ stencil brush

SUPPLIES FROM AROUND THE HOUSE:  Tape, rags

Wood Icing™, Textura Paste, project, texture, stencil, stencil creme, Royal Design Studio

STEP ONE  Remove any hardware. Lightly mist the stencil on the back side (to help keep the Textura Paste from bleeding underneath). Place it in position and tape it down.

STEP TWO  Using the Off Set Knife, “butter” some Textura Paste over the stencil design. Let dry. This is a water-based product so it dries in about 15 minutes. Repeat and let dry.

STEP THREE  Pull up an edge of the stencil and decide if you want to sand the design a bit. If you do, just wipe off and re-tape the stencil in place. Dip the tips of your stencil brush in the stencil creme and stencil using a swirling motion. I began by layering on colors of blue, then settled on Patina Green as my top layer. Let dry completely and replace your hardware.

Clean the stencil as soon as you finish with soap and water and a green scrubby pad.

Done! What do you think? I love the added pop of texture and color to pull in the colors around the room including the bedding and ottoman. Give this easy project a try. It takes so little product and it’s great to work on while you are doing other tasks around the house!

Debbie Dion Hayes: A Rustic Vase Project Using Wood Icing™ and Chalk Paint®

Here is a fun recent post from MyPatchOfBlueSky.com.

Want a fun, easy, almost-anything-goes project? Let’s have a blast delving into Rose Wilde’s cool Wood Icing™ products! Having a bit of a reputation for using products in funky ways, I decided to use some of my favorite products in conjunction with the basic Textura Paste on a hunk of fallen teak from Indonesia that an artist turned into a gorgeous vase. Here is my finished project!
I can hear you saying, “Debbie I do not have one of those laying around my house, nor do I have a clue as to where to buy one.” I know. But somewhere you do have something made of wood that you can use right? A candlestick, maybe a lamp base or go crazy and do the inside panels of doors on a chest of drawers. This post is all about getting creative with Wood Icing™, Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan and a gorgeous stencil – getting out of our comfort zone called Perfection – and getting into Fabulous, Rustic and Imperfect.

SUPPLIES: Use the colors and stencil listed or try your own
• Stencil – I used Royal Design Studio Large Allover Brocade
• Water, containers, brushes, rags, paper towels, 220-grit sandpaper

STEP ONE  Clean your piece with a damp cloth if necessary. STEP TWO  Arrange the stencil in an artful way. (This stencil was chosen because perfection is not necessary and it can be turned to accommodate the odd shape of the piece.) Hold the stencil in place and dip the Off-Set knife into the Textura Paste. Trowel it over the stencil.  Let dry. Repeat until the item is completely stenciled. Wash the stencil with water in between uses. STEP THREE  Lightly sand. STEP FOUR  Wipe.

STEP FIVE  Add about 40% water to a container with Graphite Chalk Paint® and stir. Paint the surface. Let dry. STEP SIX  Sand. STEP SEVEN  Dip a brush into the Tree Bark Glazing Color and cover the surface. Let dry. STEP EIGHT  Dip a clean cloth into the Clear Soft Wax and wipe over the entire exterior surface. Turn the cloth to a clean spot as needed and wipe off any excess wax. After about five minutes, buff to a lovely sheen.

Voila! A gorgeous piece to enjoy indoors – numerous ways. Add a glass full of flowers, turn it into a lamp with a string of white lights inside, or love it on its own!

MORE ABOUT WOOD ICING™ TEXTURA PASTE:
A water-based product the consistency of peanut butter. Spread it with a trowel or spatula, then use objects or tools to make impressions. Foam rubber stamps, mesh, lace, stencils and more are perfect. Stain, glaze or paint it. Oil or water-based products can be used with it. Normally 2 or 3 coats of Wood Icing PolyAcrylic is used for protection, but this project needed only a pretty sheen so Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax was used.
